In May of 2016, director Brett Ratner ( Rush Hour , Red Dragon ) indicated that he was moving full-steam ahead on The Libertine , a smaller-scale, satiric drama about an alleged 2011 hotel room incident involving French political figure and scandal magnet Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Johnny Depp was attached to star, and Ratner explained to Deadline , “I read all the scripts, usually when the movies are ready to be greenlit, and this was the one where I said, ‘My god, I wish I was directing this.’ The whole movie takes place in one location, and I’ve never done that before.
